This past week I saw two different women pushing crying babies in their prams.  One woman was walking around the shops with her baby crying and crying as she talked on her phone, trying to get her little one to sleep without having to hold or feed her. I wanted to cry for that baby who just wanted to be cuddled and I wanted to cry for that mother who must have been so exhausted and tired…a feeling I know all too well.

A few days later I saw another woman at the supermarket. She had just bought a bunch of groceries and as she was putting them into the pram to walk back home, her baby lay there crying. I went into the store myself and thought she would pick him up and soothe him once her bags were packed away. Yet when I came back out about ten minutes later and went for my walk, I saw her walking along the path, pushing her crying baby in the pram. He was wailing, lying there crying so hard as she pushed him. It took everything in me not to walk up to her and say, “I know your are probably so exhausted you cannot bear to hold him any more today! May I hold him for a moment so you can have a break?”  I thought maybe she would be annoyed though and think,  “who is this crazy woman?!” so I just moved on…

I have written this blog post to all of the women out there who have crying babies in their prams, those who are so exhausted and feel as though they cannot possible hold them again that day…I just want to say, “please, please mama…pick up your crying baby…”

Pick Up Your Crying BabyTo the mamas with crying babies…

As you lay there at night and hear your baby wake up yet again after such a short time, when you feel as though you cannot possibly open your eye lids…

Please please mama, pick up your crying baby.

When you are out at the shops and your baby is sick of being inside looking at the fruit and veggie isle, you feel a sense of urgency to finish your shopping and think you cannot take the five minutes to sit and breastfeed or cuddle your baby…

Please, please mama…pick up your crying baby.

When you are out for your walk with your baby in the pram and you just need that break from holding them, you need the feeling of your blood flowing through your legs again after sitting on the couch with your boob out all day…

Please, please mama…pick up your crying baby.

When you are out at the cafe after a lonely day at home, looking for some adult interactions, some understanding and sympathy  from other mothers who understand. When you just want to drink that cup of tea while your baby sits there in the pram starting to fuss…

Please please mama, pick up your crying baby.

If you have had no help today, no break  to pee, shower or eat without sitting down…

Please, please mama…still pick up your crying baby.

When your baby has a cold and has not slept for what feels like days and days…

Please, please mama…still pick up your crying baby.

When your baby has been fighting sleep and doesn’t want to nap, when breastfeeding does not settle them for more than five minutes, when everything seems to make them cry and even holding them does not soothe them…

Please, please mama…still pick up your crying baby.

When your baby woke up twenty times the night before and would only sleep on your chest…

Please, please mama…pick up your crying baby.

If you are a single mother or your partner has been away, you feel as though you have no strength left to mother and parent on your own…

Please, please mama…still pick up your crying baby.

If people have told you that your baby must self soothe, that you are smothering them and will spoil them by tending to their every cry and whimper…

Please, please mama…still pick up your crying baby.

If you feel lonely and sad, confused with no idea on how to be a “good” mother…seek help from friends, health care providers and community as we all need endless support when raising babies…

And please, please mama…pick up your crying baby.

Pick Up Your Crying BabyBeing a mother is one of the most heart-wrenching, wonderful, annoying, exhausting incredible experiences we will have as women. We are driven to the brink of insanity and think we cannot go on…but please, please mama…pick up your crying baby.
