Breastfeeding a toddler is awesome…about ninety percent of the time...and then the other ten percent of the times it’s…NOT awesome (just like breastfeeding a newborn really)!
Although there are some distinct differences:Newborns lie quietly and breastfeed…toddlers tend to thrash around like a caged animal.
Newborns keep their hands lying by their side or next to their face…toddlers twiddle the other nipple or pull at your hair/ears/mouth etc.
Latching on a newborn requires the light of an iPhone at 2am…a toddler rolls over and finds it themselves-all while the mum sleeps! Bliss!
Newborns often times breastfeed non-stop…toddlers often times breastfeed non-stop…wait? Really? Yes, really…
Breastmilk is made up of incredible anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-infective, immune building (and many other awesome) properties. See my ARTICLE on this topic. These do not stop working after your baby has grown into a toddler! Every time you breastfeed your toddler you are not only getting your hair pulled out and having a circus show entertainment of gymNURSEsticks, but you are also giving your baby nutrition, comfort and immune building properties which help them throughout their entire lives.
Throughout this article are some pictures I have taken of MiniTheMilk recently.
He cracks me up on numerous occasions when breastfeeding. Sometimes I am amazed by the positions he can get himself into all while staying latched on. Yes, my nipple is pulled to incredible lengths and I am amazed it has not fallen off at times…
Breastfeeding does get easier! If you are currently feeling overwhelmed by your breastfed baby or if you are feeling overwhelmed by your breastfed toddler, I say to both of you…it does get easier! The wonderful outweighs the challenging in both situations…and breastfeeding a toddler is pretty fun, always entertaining and just as nature intended. Breastfeeding into toddlerhood is not, “extended breastfeeding” it is simply breastfeeding to natural term.
Who else out there is breastfeeding to natural term? I know I’m not the only one 🙂
